Why do Bic pen caps have holes in the top?

Ever wonder why Bic pen caps have little holes in the top?

Bic pen caps
The Bic Cristal Pen is deigned to have a hole at the end of it’s cap. But why? One reason is to prevent the pen from leaking ink with allowing air into the cap. For this next reason, you may want to hold on to your chair, because it will blown you right out of your seat.

Who knew?! We sure didn’t. However, it makes total sense. According to Buzz60s video and Business Insider, more than 10,000 case of people swallowing pens or pencils was reported between the years 2000 and 2010. BIC states in their FAQs section on their website that “all our BIC® caps comply with international safety standards that attempt to minimize the risk of children accidentally inhaling pen caps.”

So the next time you need something to gnaw on while in deep though, know that your BIC pen cap is your best bet.
